A useful camp wash station does not try to copy a kitchen sink. It gives you a stable place for a small amount of water and a clear container for what comes off the dishes.

One wide basin can rinse vegetables first and handle utensils later, provided the food stages stay separate. A folding prep tub is compact to pack and can be paired with a jug and small bottles. Choose a size that can be carried when partly filled rather than at maximum capacity.

A new folding product from the 2025 range, selected for this article.

The minimum workable setup

  • A level basin with a closed drain and an easy-to-reach plug.
  • A separate water container, so clean water is not stored in the washing basin.
  • A waste bag and container for used water, rather than pouring it directly onto the campsite.

Build the station in stages

  1. Set up away from the tent entrance and cooking flame, on ground that will not be damaged by water.
  2. Use clean water for food preparation, then change the basin or wash it before it becomes a dish station.
  3. Allow used water to cool before moving a hot item and follow the campsite’s disposal rules.
  4. Dry the basin and empty the water container before packing up.

An 8L basin is practical for two people and a short trip. A 16L basin helps with larger meals but becomes heavy; plan a water change that does not require carrying the basin across the site.

Contain the flow of water

A portable station works when clean water, food and dirty utensils each have a sequence. The basin is only part of that system; its drain and the waste-water container are just as important.
