A picnic container has to carry more than food. It may also protect plates, a serving tool and a small amount of washing water before the trip home. Choosing the size starts with the full load, not just the sandwiches.
An 8L tub is usually enough for two people and a compact meal. A 16L prep tub has more room for several dishes or a family portion, but it becomes heavier when filled and needs more space in the car.
Pack the imaginary picnic
- Count the food containers and plates that need a flat place.
- Allow space for a cloth and a small sealed container of wet items.
- Check that the lid closes without resting on soft fruit or bread.
Match the size to the route
- For a short walk, choose the smallest size that fits the meal without compressing it.
- For a longer walk, split heavy items into two smaller containers or use a backpack-friendly arrangement.
- Keep raw meat and ready-to-eat food in separate sealed inner containers.
- At the picnic, close the lid between servings and keep the tub out of direct sun.
Choose 8L for a couple, a child-friendly snack lunch or a small picnic. Choose 16L for four people, several side dishes or a picnic that also includes plates and serving tools.
Pack for the walk and the table
The larger tub should provide useful surface, not just extra weight. Test the filled size on your route and keep the clean serving side separate from anything wet or raw.
