At the beach, sand reaches anything that is left open. A picnic setup works better when food stays in closed containers and washing happens in a basin that can be filled from a separate water supply.
Use a lidded basket or tub for packaged food and a separate basin for rinsing fruit or wiping hands and tools. A broad base is easier to keep stable on soft ground. Keep the food container closed between servings and use a clean plate rather than reaching back into shared packaging.
Keep three zones apart
- Closed food and drink containers on a stable picnic mat.
- A water basin placed away from the food, with its lid kept available for covering.
- A bag for used napkins, packaging and empty containers.
Pack for sand and wind
- Fill the water container before leaving and carry the basin empty.
- Set the food container on a mat or low table, not directly on sand.
- Rinse fruit and small tools over the basin, then close it and wipe the outside.
- Pack waste and wet cloths in separate bags so the journey home stays dry.
An 8L folding container is enough for a couple and a small picnic. A 16L or 20L container is better for a family with several dishes. Choose a lid that stays closed in wind and a base that is easy to wipe clean.
Protect the clean side
The beach is not a reason to overcomplicate the meal. Closed food, a separate water supply and a clear waste bag prevent most of the small problems that make a picnic messy.
