A market day needs a washing setup that can be put away when the stall closes. A folding basin is useful when produce is bunched on site or when a few vegetables need a last rinse before display.

The basin should not be confused with a display crate. Keep the washed produce in a clean tray, the basin on a stable table and the water supply separate. A broad carry handle makes it easier to move the empty basin between the van and stall.

Organise the stall like a workbench

  • Keep clean produce at one end and soiled crates or trimmings at the other.
  • Use a dedicated water container and a separate bag for waste.
  • Place the basin where it cannot be knocked off a table by customers or wind.

A market-day washing cycle

  1. Set up the basin before produce is displayed and confirm the drain is closed.
  2. Rinse small batches, move them directly to a clean drying tray and keep the display covered.
  3. Change water when it becomes cloudy and wipe the basin between food types.
  4. At closing, empty the basin into an appropriate drain, clean it and fold it once dry.

Choose a size that one person can lift and empty at the stall. A 16L or 20L basin improves capacity but needs a stable, low table and a clear route to a legal water-disposal point.

Make washing part of the layout

A folding basin works better when it has a defined place on the stall and a clean tray beside it. The fold is useful only after the basin has been drained and dried.
