A prep tub is easy to put away when it is empty and dry, but that is rarely the state it reaches at the end of a cookout. A short storage routine prevents the tub from becoming a closed box of trapped moisture and food smells.

The best place to store it is not always the darkest cupboard. Airflow matters after washing. Put the tub where it can remain open for a few hours if the folds are still damp, then move it to its compact storage place.

Before the tub goes away

  • Empty the drain, remove any food packaging and wipe the inside corners.
  • Open the lid and let the body air-dry rather than closing it immediately.
  • Check the underside and the drain plug area, where water can collect without being noticed.

A five-minute reset

  1. Wash with warm soapy water and rinse the drain opening.
  2. Dry the large surfaces with a clean cloth and leave the folds open.
  3. Store the lid off or loosely placed until condensation has cleared.
  4. Fold only when fully dry and keep heavier camping gear from pressing the walls out of shape.

An 8L tub can dry in a dish rack if the folds are opened. A 16L tub may need a bathtub edge or drying rack. If a large tub has no dry-out space, choose a smaller model rather than storing it wet.

Storage starts with the last wash

The final five minutes of clean-up decide whether the next trip starts with a fresh tub. Keep the lid, drain and folds in the routine, not only the visible inside.
